James T. Ramey's AEC UFO program (1962–73)

Family account of a top-secret landed-UFO investigation — empty FOIA

AECArea 51 (cover claim)

Hume interviewed Dr. James Ramey II. The commissioner sat on a TS AEC program to investigate landed UFOs so the USSR would not gain a nuclear edge. Nothing credible found; the team also used UFO suspicion as cover for prohibited weapons. FOIA to NRC, DOE, NARA: no records. Hume keeps this next to Hineman and Starfish as a tranche that has not been touched.

Findings

Each line is tagged as a FOIA outcome, something someone told Hume, open literature, a leak, or Hume's own reading. Do not treat the last as a document.

  1. 01Hume's reading

Dates line up with Ramey's AEC tenure (1962–73) and with Starfish (1962).

  2. 02On the record

Grandson: no government knowledge of aliens; duty was to make sure Soviets did not get it first; UFO talk also used as cover.

  3. 03FOIA outcome

Archives empty except a 1952 AEC-interest clipping. Hume: a requester with authority would do better.

  4. 04Hume's reading

NDAA 2023's Atomic Energy Act 1954 language is, for Hume, the relevant lock.

spoke with JT Ramey's (AEC commisioner 62-73) grandson about a TS AEC ufo program which AFAIK has never been disclosed/acknowledged.
